My Love for Elephants

I don’t remember when I first fell in love with elephants, but they have been a part of my life for some time now. To me, elephants are earth’s gentle giants. I feel I relate to elephants as a mother and protector of my family.

Elephants are revered as a symbol of good luck, prosperity, destroyer of evil, and remover of obstacles, as well as strength, power, wisdom, memory, and vitality. I love elephants so much that it was a must for me to get a tattoo. Ok, the truth is, I had to cover up a tattoo I got when I was younger. Why not get something meaningful this time around?

I have either collected or been given an elephant, I have twenty-five and counting. I have a few pieces of jewelry as well. I joke with my children and ask them, “who will take on my collection when I get older.” No one has answered me yet to this question.

Whoever takes them, I just hope they are well cared for. I even took a try at painting an elephant. I am no painter, but it is special to me. I think I will try to paint more; I am sure I will get better.

I love exploring unfamiliar places to visit and when I saw this museum pop up on my Facebook, I went nuts. Literally.

A Roadside Attraction I Went Nuts For

Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium is a wonderful roadside attraction. It is an elephant museum and candy store rolled into one. It is located at 6019 Chambersburg Rd, Orrtanna, PA 17353.

I put the address in my GPS, it was going to be a 3-hour and 15-minute car ride. Of course, I did not mind the ride. I was going to be in elephant heaven! I do not know where to begin it was so much to take in. I felt like a kid in a candy store!

We pulled into the driveway and the grounds are surrounded by elephant sculptures. Mister Ed’s collection of elephants features more than 12,000 elephant figurines, circus souvenirs, political paraphernalia, toys, and more.

This is an attraction for all ages and that is what we saw during our visit.

Either you had the enthused single photographer, the romantic couple, or the family that was full of smiles posing for photos. It was wonderful to see people being out enjoying their day and the weather was gorgeous.

The sun was shining bright, and the temperature was warm close to 80 degrees. I picked the perfect day for a road trip.

“Mister Ed” Gotwalt (May 20, 1936-February 26, 2021) was the founder and former owner of Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium and a beloved Gettysburg area legend.

He and his wife Pat sold the business to his granddaughter Nicole and her husband Isaac in 2014.

Candy and Elephants OH MY!!!

After spending over an hour outside we headed in. The first thing I smelled was the homemade fudge and roasted nuts. The candy took me back to my childhood too. There is a giant elephant right in the smack of the store. There are over hundreds of elephants on display. You may purchase gifts for yourself as well. There’s jewelry, clothing, cups, and everything elephant you can think of.

We got some t-shirts, candy and of course, I had to take an elephant home. After years of wanting to come here, I am so happy that I made the trip. This is a must-see and I recommend coming to visit.
