Moving to Roxbury Township
I grew up in Newark, NJ in a high-rise building. I would stare out my window that was on the fourteenth floor and wonder what was behind all the trees that I saw in the distance. Was it a forest, where did it lead to, did everything stop at the trees? I had so many questions.
I love nature and being outdoors and exploring. I would picture myself traveling up to those trees that I could play in, camp in, or even get lost.
When we were looking for homes, I manifested what I wanted since I was a child. I just didn’t know it. I wanted trees, mountains, hearing the birds sing in the morning. I did not know they would be waking me up tweeting at sunrise, but I love it. I wanted to go far away from the city. We wanted to get away from the noise, and the rush.
The best part was our realtor grew up in this area and said Roxbury Township was a great place to raise a family. We did not know the town’s amazing history and all the beautiful places to visit surrounding us.
We have a wonderful neighbor who grew up in town as a child and loves sharing stories about Ledgewood. We even found an old horseshoe in the backyard where the Morris Canal run through.
Fun Things to Do and Eat in Roxbury Township
Photography was and still is a passion of mine. Living here in Roxbury gave me so much material that I started my travel blog, The Traveling Aquarian. I love exploring new places to visit that are budget-friendly or free. I have children and our lovely boxer Dakota, so I am always looking for new adventures to explore.

King Store and Homestead Museum
The King Store is a 2½ story building built of rubble stone in 1815 by Woodruff and Hopkins. On the ground floor, its walls are 3 feet thick. Originally it had white stucco walls with green shutters and doors. The Woodruff family operated the store until 1835.
For approximately two years it lay abandoned and was home to wandering goats and sheep. In 1837 Albert Riggs (son of Silas Riggs, a tanner by trade and owner of several canal boats) acquired the building and reopened it as a general store serving the community and the Morris Canal trade.
For many years it also served as Post Office and its owner as Postmaster. The Store was located 150 feet from the Morris Canal Basin.
Theodore King, the son-in-law of Albert Riggs, took over the Store in 1873. He lived on the second floor of the building with his wife and daughter. By 1881, Mr. King had built a residence on adjacent property and then began a renovation of the Store, changing the decor to Greek revival and the color scheme to creme with brown trim. In the process, the exterior was given a smooth coat of stucco which was scored to resemble large blocks.
The interior of the Store was given an Italianate design with cream and maroon color scheme. The Roxbury Rotary restored and stabilized the building by early 2000 and then began work on the Homestead.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Store_and_Homestead
