The Red Mill Museum was on my photography bucket list to capture. I saw countless photos of the beautiful red mill. The mill has been photographed in all seasons. From colorful orange and red leaves covering the mill to capturing the snow covered wonderland. We chose one of the hottest days to visit the mill. This weather has been so unpredictable so we headed on our road trip. Bring water and sunblock.

The Red Mill Museum is located at 56 Main St., Clinton, NJ 08809. Hours are Tuesday-Friday 10 am-4 pm. Saturday and Sunday 12 pm-6 pm. Admission: Weekdays reduced fee for age 6 and up $5 for all visitors. Age 5 and under are free. Weekends adults $10, seniors and veterans $8, children 6-12 $6 and 5 and under are free. The staff was pleasant and knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information about the mill.

I didn’t research the mill going because my main focus was only to photograph this structure. I was amazed to find out that the Red Mill was also a 19th century historic museum. The Red Mill was in operation from 1810-1928. Ralph Hunt processed wool but the business failed and was taken over by John Bray and John B. Taylor from 1828 to 1834. They changed the name of the town from Hunt’s Mill to Clinton. They milled wool but also begin milling grinding feed, flour, stone plaster and chestnut wood.

The Mill changed hands several times over the years. The Mill provided electricity for Clinton street lamps. Frank and Pat Mulligan purchased the property in 1848. The Mulligan Quarry is where Irish immigrants migrated to Clinton and worked. The Mulligan Quarry was in business until the 1960’s.

We enjoyed walking over 10 acres and seeing the buildings that still remained. The Lime Kilns, Quarry building, Dynamite Shed, Blacksmith Shop and Tenant house still remain. The Mill hold several events throughout the year from Blacksmith events, movie nights, group tours, ghosts adventures and weddings.
